Outlook Folders: Sort Them in the Order You Prefer

If you've got folders set up in Outlook and prefer to arrange them in order of importance (instead of Outlook's default alphabetical order), you've probably already found that Outlook won't let you drag & drop folders to display them the way you want.

A way to get around this is to rename a folder with a prefix of a number or a letter.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Right-click on the folder you want to appear at the top of the folder list.
  2. On the menu that opens, click on Rename.
  3. Add either the number 1 or the letter a to the name of the folder.  For example, if the folder is named "WisPubLib", change the name to "1 WisPubLib".
  4. Press the Enter key.
  5. Continue renaming other folders, assigning successive letter or number prefixes according to the order in which you want the folders to be diplayed.
